Every Wednesday and Friday morning this summer we have driven towards the Tetons to JH Golf and Tennis to splish splash around in the pool and take swimming lessons with beloved Kiely. Sam must remember the womb, because from the beginning has been calm and collected in the water, enjoying the liquid movement. Mostly at his age it is about feeling comfortable in the water, learning how to dunk and be okay with being underwater, and starting to kick and reach the legs and arms. I love watching his little face light up as we bob around and the surprised but relatively serene look he has on his face from he emerges from the blue depths.
Feeling at home in the water is important to me. I have the ocean in my blood and would stay in the water as a child until my fingers and toes would prune up. I know that Sam doesn't have to grow up to be a fish, but it is also paramount for other activities-sailing, rafting, canoeing, paddle boarding-that he knows how to save himself if needed.
In a couple weeks swimming lessons will come to an end until next summer. Another indicator, like the cool mountain mornings, that a new season is around the corner.
